Fouls in play

10 rules

  1. 26Crossing

Nobody may cross a player who has the line of the ball unless far enough away that there is no chance of a collision or danger.

  2. 27Line of the ball

Who has the right to the ball: two riders riding each other off on the line, then a single player on the line with the ball on their right, then the smaller angle.

  3. 28Right of way

What happens to the right of way when the ball is deflected, when a player hits it towards an opponent, and when a player hits it past an opponent riding alongside.

  4. 29Carrying the ball

A player may carry or strike the ball with the body once per play; doing it again is a free hit from the spot against them.

  5. 30Improper use of the stick

When a stick may be hooked, and only below the shoulder in the act of striking; no hitting one's own pony with the stick; no dangerous stick.

  6. 31Rough play

No grabbing, and no striking or pushing with the head, hand, forearm or elbow; pushing with the upper arm is allowed with the elbow kept in.

  7. 32Blocking

Nobody may block the opponent marking the player about to restart play, nor block a defender within two horse lengths of a slowed player in possession.

  8. 33Dangerous riding

The AAP's list of dangerous riding: bad ride-offs, zig-zagging, pulling across, pushing an opponent into a cross, intimidating and sandwiching.

  9. 34Unsportsmanlike conduct, the whip and dangerous hits

What counts as misconduct before, during and after a match, how much a player may use the whip, and when a hard hit into an opponent is a foul.

  10. 35Delay of game

A player who slows down to fish for a foul is told 'play the ball' and has 5 seconds to get rid of it; a defender stuck across the line is told to clear it.
