If the match is played on handicap, it shall be treated as if the starting player had actually played. If a substitute comes on, the general rule on replacements shall apply. If for any reason a team is left with only two players, the match shall be suspended and declared lost by that team, except where two players of the same team receive a second yellow card within the same two minutes, in which case the team may go on playing with two players until the two-minute penalty imposed has been served.

During a match a player may be replaced by another only if he cannot continue because of physical inability, force majeure or a disciplinary sanction. These causes shall be left to the umpire's judgement. When the substitute has a lower handicap than the player replaced, the latter's handicap shall be counted for the whole match; that is, the handicap given shall not be changed. When the substitute has a higher handicap, the handicaps of the two players must be added, each taken in proportion to the number of periods played by each, and from that sum must be subtracted the handicap of the player replaced, as if he had played all the chukkas set. Goal differences of 0.25 or more resulting from this last calculation shall count as one goal, and smaller ones shall not be taken into account. The fractions of the period in which the replacement takes place shall be counted as played in full by the substitute. When a player is replaced by another of higher handicap, Tables No 2 a), b) or c), as appropriate, must be applied to calculate the advantage. In the case of a disciplinary sanction, the substitute may not have a higher handicap than the player sent off.

In tournaments and matches each team may use up to three substitutes (meaning at least one starting player on the field), unless the tournament has special regulations, and they may stand in for any of the starting players in any match. The inclusion of any of the substitutes in the team must be notified to the tournament's organising authorities before the match. The handicap to be counted is that of the players who actually play.

Unless the tournament regulations provide otherwise, no player or pony may play for more than one team. To be able to play, substitutes must meet the conditions required by the regulations of the tournament or match, and the team must also meet those conditions after the substitution. This last requirement shall not apply when a team has started playing in accordance with the regulations and, having to replace a player because of force majeure, cannot find a substitute who keeps the team within the regulations. “In this exceptional case, the substitute, who may go on taking part throughout the tournament, must have a handicap that always keeps his team within the maximum limit set by its conditions. If the tournament is played on handicap and, as a result of the substitute coming on, the team is left with a handicap below the minimum, the team must play with the latter.” NOTE: For “short” tournaments played within the same week outside the metropolitan area, players from the same tournament may be used as substitutes in the following order: 1. In the qualifying stage, a player from another group. 2. In the knockout stage, a player from a team already eliminated. Substitute players must be of equal or lower handicap.
