Rule 4 · AAP Reglas de Juego 2026
Umpires, referee, goal judges, timekeeper and scorer
Who controls an AAP match, how official referees are registered, what the umpires may decide, and how the goal judges signal.
Official and unofficial referees
Official and unofficial Umpires and Referees Polo Umpires and Referees are distinguished, among other things, between those who are on the Register of Official Referees (hereinafter the RROO), and those who, while not on that register, nonetheless take part in a polo match as Referees, whether occasionally or not, but as an incidental circumstance clearly secondary to their usual participation as a polo player (hereinafter the “Unofficial Referees” and, together with the RROO, called the “Referees”). Although only the RROO are subject in their work and in that capacity to specific rules, Unofficial Referees must equally observe these Rules of the Game of Polo as compulsory, in order to respect and enforce the rules of the game among those who play it, and they shall also be liable to the appropriate sanctions, as the RROO are, set out in the Código de Faltas. To distinguish the RROO from Unofficial Referees, whenever these Rules of the Game of Polo refer to the RROO exclusively, they shall be identified as such; this is without prejudice to the RROO being subject, in everything that applies, to the requirements laid down for Unofficial Referees, and consequently these rules shall be deemed also to refer to the RROO whenever the figure of the “Umpire and/or Referee” is mentioned.

General aspects of the work of the RRO The AAP, as the Governing Body of Polo, is responsible for ensuring strict compliance with the rules of the game, issuing measures and implementing effective actions to prevent accidents, to encourage and promote the practice of the sport and to guarantee that it is properly conducted on all the fields or grounds where it is played. a) Among the measures and actions concerning the RROO, the AAP assumes the power to: set up and administer a “Register of RROO” (hereinafter the “Register of RROO”), grant the RROO their authorisation and revoke their inclusion in that register, establish an order of appointment and call-up for matches according to how demanding they are, periodically review and assess their competence and performance in umpiring, as well as their physical and mental fitness, run training courses, define each referee's category, etc. b) The RROO may only umpire polo matches in the Argentine Republic if they are entered on the AAP's Register of RROO, by submitting their availability for each season and its acceptance by the AAP. c) It is expressly confirmed that the RROO (and where applicable the Unofficial Referees, goal judges, timekeepers and scorers) are, together with the players, responsible for upholding on the field the tenets of the sport, such as respect among all those taking part in the game, gentlemanliness and proper behaviour, also seeking, in their capacity and in their work as Referees, observance of the Rules of the Game and of the principles promoted by amateurism, both to improve the practice of the sport and to preserve its philosophy, by virtue of which each of those taking part in the game does so, above all else, for pleasure. The voluntary decision of each of the RROO to apply for and keep their entry on the Register of RROO shall be the clearest expression of this commitment and understanding.

Goal judges In all important matches, and in others when possible, goal judges shall be appointed. They shall stand at each goal and signal that a goal has been scored by waving a flag above their head(s); if the ball has gone over the back line they shall wave it horizontally at knee height. At the umpire's request they shall report to him on goals or other incidents of play near their goal, but the umpires shall give all decisions.
