A four-chukka match: each chukka 7 minutes and up to 30 seconds more; intervals of 3 minutes. If a foul is called after the bell, the umpire's whistle ends the period and the penalty shall be taken at the start of the next period.

The last period shall end, even though the ball is still in play, at the first stroke of the final bell (not at the referee's whistle), except in the case of a tie in knockout matches.
Original text
Running and stopping of the clock. Play can be stopped in two different ways: • When the umpire blows the whistle. This is the way used for fouls, corners and for the cases described of a broken or buried ball, lost helmet or broken tack, dismounted player, and accident or injury. In this case play restarts with the taking of the foul awarded, or with a throw-in in the other cases described. • When the end-of-chukka bell has rung and the ball goes over the back line or side line before the final 30 seconds are up. Or when the final 30 seconds are up, at which moment the second bell shall be rung. In this case play shall restart with a knock-in, a hit-in from the boards, or a throw-in if the second bell has rung.

In category B tournament matches of up to 14 goals handicap, a change of horses shall be allowed halfway through the chukka, the teams having one minute to make it. The referee shall be responsible for calling the change at a neutral moment of play. The minute shall start running from the moment the team furthest from its pony lines crosses the half-way line.

In the case of a tie, the last period shall be extended until the ball goes out of play or 30 seconds have passed since the bell rang, and if the tie still stands, after an interval of 5 minutes play shall restart from where the ball went out of play and continue in periods of the usual length, with the usual intervals, until one of the two sides scores a goal, which shall end the match.

If a penalty is awarded within the last 5 seconds of the match, the timekeeper shall allow 5 seconds of play, counted from the moment the penalty is taken. If a new foul is called within the 5 seconds allowed, the same procedure shall be followed. The match shall end as always, at the first stroke of the final bell.

If the referee does not hear the bell in any of the chukkas, he may ask the timekeeper to check the exact moment it was rung.
Original text
Apart from the intervals mentioned above, play must be continuous, and no time shall be taken off for changing ponies during a period, except as laid down for accident or injury.

NOTE: “When a “Penalty 1” or “Foul and Goal” is awarded, the clock shall be started when the half-way foul is taken or the ball is bowled in at the throw-in. The same approach shall be followed where goals are awarded under the provisions of “30-yard Penalty (Penalty 2)” and “40-yard Penalty (Penalty 3)”, that is, when the goal is given because the ball, which was heading for goal, was stopped illegally under those rules.”
