Rule 38 · AAP Reglas de Juego 2026
Taking a penalty
Twenty seconds to take a penalty, one honest attempt, no tee, no re-placing, and one stroke for Penalties 3, 4 and 6.
Once the “foul” has been decided, the referee shall allow 20 seconds for it to be taken, after giving the order to “play”. When that time has passed, a throw-in on the spot shall be awarded, leaving the “good” side to the team that did NOT commit the foul. At all free hits the ball shall be considered in play from the moment it has been hit, or a hit has been attempted and missed. Hitting or attempting to hit is to be understood as any action intended to put the ball into play. The player must hit the ball or try to hit it at the first attempt; it is not allowed to ride over the ball, to turn back, changing one's mind, during the final approach, or to take exaggerated run-ups. Breaking this rule shall be penalised with a throw-in from the centre towards the boards. At penalty hits it shall not be allowed to set up the ball on a mound of earth or grass made with the head of the stick, or in any other way (tee-up). Once the ball has been set up for a penalty and the Umpire has given the order to take it, the ball may not be set up again, and the Player must take it with the ball as it lies. Penalties 3 (40 yards), 4 (60 yards) and 6 (corner) must be taken with a single stroke. Consequently the player taking the penalty may not make a preparatory dribble, for himself or for a teammate. Breaking this rule shall be penalised with a throw-in. No foul committed against a player of the attacking side, when play is within the 54.90 m 60-yard line, shall be penalised with a penalty less favourable than Penalty 4 (60 yards).

NOTE: If the free hit is missed or mishit, the ball shall be in play and the attacking team may only intervene with a controlled half-swing stroke.
