Fouls in play
10 rules
- 26Crossing
Nobody may cross in front of the player who has precedence unless there is no risk of collision at all.
- 27Line of the ball
The line of the ball is the path the ball has taken, extended, and it decides which player has precedence over the others.
- 28Right of way
The player with the ball may carry on down the line of the ball to hit it on their offside, and the rule sets out what happens when the ball or the line changes.
- 29Carrying the ball
A player may block the ball once with their body but may never catch it or carry it on purpose.
- 30Improper use of the stick
When, where and how a player may hook an opponent's stick.
- 31Riding off
A ride-off is legal only at the same speed, shoulder to shoulder and at a safe angle, with the elbow kept in.
- 32Impeding the primary
When a player with the ball stops or slows, their teammates may not block the opponent coming to challenge them.
- 33Rough play
Examples of ride-offs dangerous enough to earn a yellow or red flag on top of the penalty.
- 34Dangerous play
No riding, positioning, stick work or hitting that endangers anyone, or puts the player's own pony at undue risk.
- 35Unsportsmanlike conduct
Behaviour by players, teams or their staff that is inappropriate or brings polo into disrepute, with examples.
